Physical activity for adults
Physical activity is important for adults to maintain their health, but many adults don't do enough.
Physical activity can help with weight loss, reduce the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. It also helps to lower anxiety and depression and improves mood.
There are two types of physical activity: moderate and vigorous. Moderate activities are things like walking at a brisk pace or gardening. Vigorous activities are more intense and include running or cycling at a fast pace.
The National Health Service recommend that adults should do moderate-intensity exercise 150 minutes a week (30 minutes five times a week) or vigorous-intensity exercise 75 minutes a week. In general, 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity a week can give similar health benefits to 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity.
